Following the success of 12th Night The Commandery Players (in association with Tisbury Arts Group) will be performing The Relapse by Sir John Vanbrugh at Ansty Commandery on Thursday June 13th to Saturday June 15th .
“The Relapse” was very popular in its day and has become one of the staples of Restoration Comedy, a period of about 40 years from 1660 when the monarchy was restored under King Charles II. Many of the comedies of this time have a reputation for being somewhat lewd, largely as a reaction against the Puritanism of Oliver Cromwell’s republic when the theatres were closed for 18 years. “The Relapse” has some of the bawdiness of the period but also gives the audience the chance to laugh at human folly, political and religious corruption and outrageous self-obsession and vanity. All done with Vanbrugh’s characteristic vivacity and cynical wit.
The Ansty Commandery will replicate the intimate atmosphere of a small Restoration theatre and, as in previous summers, the grounds will be available for picnics.
Performances at 7.30pm. 13th June to 15th June. Tickets £10 from Tisbury Post Office.
