Community event 10th anniversary

Durrington is preparing its 10th annual Sunday Funday. Set up as a charity event to raise funds for the village hall preschool, the event is now a hugely popular community event, and last year it more than 2000 visitors . This year’s event will raise funds for Radnor Ward at Salisbury hospital, Wiltshire Air Ambulance and other local groups.

Co-founders Dion and Emma Spencer said: “It’s mainly aimed at children, so there’s stuff going on all afternoon, keeping them entertained and bringing the community together while making a few pennies for local charities. We have raised more than £15,000 over the past nine years which we’ve donated to small local charities, groups and individuals in need.”

With fun and games all day on the main arena, Disco Dion leads the celebrations, announcing events and performers. Attractions include stalls, car boot, face painting, bouncy castles, prize raffle, food stalls and a bar.

The organisers have added Retro in the Rec, a music event on the village recreational ground the evening before the Funday

“We provide a great event for the youngsters, but felt grownups needed a treat too. In its four year history, the evening Retro event has grown and it’s fabulous to see everyone singing and dancing to live music and a disco – a perfect end to the summer break. The joint event is now quite a beast to organise and we couldn’t do it without the support of local businesses and a top team of volunteers who help us set up, and of course, clear up after.”

Retro in the Rec is on the evening of Saturday, August 24 from  5.30pm to 10.30pm, followed by Sunday Funday on  August 25 from 12 noon to 4pm.

All visitors need is a picnic blanket, the enthusiasm to join in and a few pounds for some of the activities – all helping to raise funds for local charities.
