New activities for the whole family are planned at Stourhead, including a treasure in the house, the view across the lake, or finding the perfect picnic spot.
The Great Big Tree Climbing Company visits every Saturday when you can climb up into the canopies, or play the life-sized board game ‘Bank or Bust’ or join the crafty drop-in sessions on weekdays in August.
The Great Big Tree Climbing Company experience is suitable for all over the age of six (bookable online. £20 per climb including entry for one child and accompanying adult).
The ‘Bank or Bust’ board game channels the bravery of Stourhead’s creators, the Hoare family and the investments they made in the South Sea Company. Perfect for groups (£1 per player), the aim is to get rich quick by “buying up” favourite parts of Stourhead’s 18th-century landscape garden, competing in crazy challenges to be crowned winner.
Family craft workshops are in the Stableyard under a shady tent: make insect homes and birdfeeders (£1 per craft) to take home for your own garden, using natural and recycled materials such as egg boxes and cans.
Throughout the holidays, the National Trust runs ‘50 things to do before you’re 11¾’, activities including building a den, making a trail with sticks, climbing a huge hill, and running around in the rain. The activity charts help families engage with the nature around them and challenge themselves to see how many of the activities they can complete over the summer.
As well as all the activities, there are plenty of places to play games such as hide-and-seek, as well as to relax and enjoy a picnic in the landscape garden this summer.
