South Wilts CC claimed their first win in this year’s ECB Premier Division on Saturday, May 4 at the Jubilee Playing Fields, Alton.
Alton won the toss and opted to field first. Tom Morton and Peter Rowe put on 50 together before Rowe became the first League victim for Alton’s overseas paceman, Matt Bacon.
James Hayward 63, together with Tom Morton 112, put on a matchwinning 3rd wicket partnership of 118. Ben Draper added a useful 27 before becoming one of Toby Salmon’s four victims (10-1-57-4) as South Wilts closed their innings on 272 all out.
Ryan Covey 36 and Michael Heffernen 36 put on 77 for the first wicket until Luke Evans took a diving catch to give Steve Warner the first of his two victims.
Mark Heffernan 46 and Matt Bacon with a whirlwind 53 from just 27 balls kept Alton in the chase, but once Matt Burton caught Bacon off the bowling of Godsal (two for 42) the game swung dramatically back in favour of SWCC, who eventually dismissed Alton for 243 to give SWCC a hard-fought victory.
On his 1st XI league debut, Will Harries looked an exciting prospect finishing with four wickets for 37 runs from his 10 overs.
