Learn a new skill and play the ukulele: cheap to buy, small in size and best played in a group.

That’s the offer from Shaftesbury Ukulele Band.

Robin Walter started ukulele groups in Shaftesbury six years ago and has spread to Wimborne and Salisbury.

Sessions are run according to ability. The first session caters for complete beginners, teaching and practising the basics.

Intermediate sessions teach more difficult chords and techniques, such as strumming and fingerpicking, covering a wide range of popular songs. In the advanced sessions, the group plays different parts in ensemble arrangements.

In all classes, the focus is on fun and playing together for participants to keep body and mind active, learn a new skill, practice new songs and meet others.

The ukulele group also performs locally –optional but popular – and have played at Shaftesbury Fringe, the Anonymous Travelling Market and Larmer Tree Gardens.

Shaftesbury classes are at the Arts Centre, 13 Bell St, Shaftesbury, SP7 8AR, at 4.30pm on Tuesdays in term-time.
