Expanded programme of garden-based events adds to Knoll Gardens’ naturalistic appeal

An expanded programme of more than 50 events is planned by Dorest-based Knoll Gardens in 2018. Well known for its popular grass masterclasses, this year sees the addition of guided walks, wildlife events and art, craft and photography workshops, as well as Knoll’s first musical afternoon. All events are very much garden-based and run right through to December 2018.

17 March: Preparing for Spring with Neil Lucas 10.30am – 12 noon, £15
Led by Knoll’s owner, this practical mini-masterclass will help ensure your grasses are ready to produce the ‘wow factor’ this summer.

24 March: Willow workshop – plant climbers with Tracy Standish
Learn simple willow weaving techniques as you create a plant support to use in your garden this
spring. 10.30am – 1pm, £30. Book online or at the nursery.

24 April: Guided Walk – Local Landscapes, Knoll Gardens and Ferndown Common
Discover more about east Dorset’s horticulture and wildlife as Knoll Gardens’ owner Neil Lucas teams up with the Dorset Wildlife Trust for this guided walk across Ferndown Common to Knoll Gardens. 2pm £5. Book online at dorsetwildlifetrust.org.uk/events.html or call DWT on 01202 692033.

26 April: Bat Walk with Jan Freeborn Enjoy a special evening stroll as you search for Knoll’s most elusive night-time visitors. Using the latest technology and years of experience, Jan will help you identify the bats you see and hear. Mark Spencer of Bournemouth Natural Science Society will also be in the garden moth trapping. 7.45pm, normal garden admission charge which will be divided between the charities involved. 28 April: Music in the Garden with Gerauschhersteller
Performing as part of Bournemouth Emerging Arts Fringe (BEAF) festival, Dorset-based musical ensemble, Gerauschhersteller use amplified pods, cacti and other plant materials in this sound performance of John Cage’s Child of Tree, and Branches. Listen to amplified sound through radio headphones in this new meditative experience. 2pm, normal garden admission charge which will be donated to the Knoll Gardens Foundation.

4 May: Knoll Gardens Foundation Volunteer Recruitment Open Day
The Knoll Gardens Foundation is a charity set up to promote sustainable, wildlife friendly gardening.
This special open day is your chance to find out about the charity and the volunteering opportunities it
offers. Further details at knollgardensfoundation.org 10am – 2pm, free.

1 June: We value our volunteers
Free garden admission to everyone showing proof of volunteering status, in any capacity, in celebration of National Volunteers Week. Meet up with our own volunteers in the morning or simply relax as you enjoy a stroll around our naturalistic garden. Please bring proof of your volunteering status to gain free admission. 11am – 3pm, free.

8 June: Art Day at Knoll
In celebration of Dorset Art Weeks the Knoll Gardens Foundation welcomes individual artists to the garden to be inspired by the Knoll’s acclaimed naturalistic style. 10am – 3pm, free.

15 June: Sculpture in the Garden – Bath stone carving workshop with Sarah Moore Join sculptor and fine artist Sarah Moore in the garden at Knoll for this special one-day stone relief. carving workshop and learn basic carving skills as you create an original piece to take home. 9.30am – 4.30pm, £75 inc materials. 16 June: Garden Wildlife Walk with Tracy Standish
Reconnect with nature on this special wildlife discovery walk. Suitable for adults and older children,
activities could include looking for nectaring insects on the flowering perennials, opening a moth trap,
enjoying bird song and even pond dipping. Bring a camera to try your hand at wildlife photography up
close. 10.30am – 12.30pm £10. Book online or at the nursery.

21 June: Designing in the Naturalistic Style
Join Neil Lucas for a walk around his acclaimed garden at Knoll as he explains his ethos and some of the concepts and techniques that have gone into the creation of this naturalistic, wildlife-friendly garden then take home some practical advice to help you bring Knoll’s stunning year-round effect to
your own garden. 10.30am – noon £15. Book online or at the nursery.

22 June: Dorset Wildlife Trust Members’ Day
Meet up with representatives of Dorset’s largest conservation charity on this special day and discover
how Knoll’s naturalistic gardening ethos continues to create a garden that welcomes wildlife as well as
providing year-round beauty. Free garden admission to DWT members and volunteers or anyone joining DWT on the day. Please show DWT membership card on arrival. 10am – 4pm, free.

Learn from the experts on guided walks, discover the best plants to attract bees to your garden, meet Knoll’s resident bumblebee surveyor and find out about the importance of encouraging solitary bees to your garden. 11am – 4pm, normal garden admission price which will be donated to the Knoll Gardens Foundation.

20 July: Guided Walk, Beautiful Butterflies with Keith Powrie
Knoll Gardens, 20 July 2018, 11am – 12.30pm, free but booking essential Locate and identify Knoll’s many butterflies with the expert help of Keith Powrie who has been recording butterfly sightings in the garden for many years. 11am – 12.30pm, free but booking essential and donations to the Knoll Gardens Foundation welcome. From maintenance to design, Neil covers all you need to know about grasses and how to use them in a garden setting. 2pm – 4.30pm, £35. Book online or at the nursery.

15 September: Better plant and garden photography workshop with Philip Smith
Join professional photographer Philip Smith, founder of International Garden Photographer of the Year
on this special course starting with the magic of the early morning light. A tutor with the Royal
Photographic Society, Philip will help you gain the skills and techniques to take great pictures Topics
covered include lighting, composition, exposure and macro photography as well as help to get the best
out of your existing equipment. All levels of experience welcome.

20 September: Professionals Grass Masterclass
Neil Lucas leads this exclusive ornamental grass course for Garden Designers and other Trade
Professionals.

22 September: Beginners Guide to Gardening with Grasses
This mini-masterclass with Neil Lucas will give you an overview of the benefits of gardening with
grasses and help you to tell your panicums from your pennisetums, as you share a walk with Neil in
his naturalistic garden.

Embrace the festive season as you learn simple willow weaving techniques to create a natural wreath
for your front door. Dress with greenery and garden cuttings and add orange slices and cinnamon

Bugs and Buds – monthly toddler club
Saturday morning toddler club to inspire a love of nature from a young age. Organised by the garden’s

Yoga in the garden
Outdoor yoga with therapist Jackie Hayfield in the tranquillity of the garden before it opens to the
public. Dependant on the weather this Thursday morning class takes place on mats on the lawn,
