The Accrington Pals by Peter Whelan
A gripping drama, The Accrington Pals is based on real life events of the first two years of the Great War. Set in Accrington, Lancashire, a working mill town, the play follows the lives of the young men who signed up and the women they leave behind.
Apollo Productions stage the production as part of their charity church tour. performed in remembrance of all those men who died in the service of their country, the women who struggled at home and even gave their lives in the munitions factories, and those brave families who still serve and live the military life now. Fundraising in aid of four Armed Forces charities – Hounds for Heroes, Little Troopers, Blesma and Combat Stress.
St George’s Church, Fovant, is particularly poignant because the real Accrington Pals (11th Service Brigade, East Lancashire Regiment) were stationed nearby at Hurdcott Camp and would have worshipped at Fovant and Compton Chamberlayne churches.
