The Road Less Travelled
Debut solo show at Messums Wiltshire
Introduction and talk by Bridget McCrum 11:00am Saturday 15 July 2017
Exhibition opens to the public at 12:00pm
Exhibition runs 15 July – 6 August
Born in Dinton, within a stones throw of the Barn at Place Farm, Bridget’s life has taken her on an extensive journey of discovery. From early years in London and Malta, Gozo and the Middle East as the wife of a British Naval Officer, it is a thirst for travel that has never left her. Now aged 81, movement continues to influence her work. The language is pared back into deceptively simple marks and gestures in charcoal or stone that are immediately suggestive. A bird leaps off the page or takes flight from a stone bringing with it a sense of the moment and also of moments long past.
It is this sense of tlmelessness that is so suggestive in her work and one of the reasons why Messums Wiltshire are delighted to be giving the first solo exhibition in this 13th Century Barn to Bridget McCrum. Time walks beside her in that sense as it does the building itself.
It is perhaps fitting that in the later years of her career Bridget has tackled questions of scale in her work. The show offers a unique opportunity to really see and understand in depth the variety and language behind her work.
Bridget McCrum – Talk: Hearing artists talk about their work is one of the most exciting and insightful parts of engaging with art. The opportunities to hear Bridget speak about her work are all the more rare and we very much look forward to hosting this free event for the public.
