Town hosts county carol service

Civic leaders and many other dignitaries and local residents attended the annual County Of Wiltshire Carol  Service, on Wednesday, December 6, this year at St Mary and St Nicholas Church, Wilton.

With traditional carols sung by  the whole congregation, readings were by Wilton Mayor Cllr Peter Edge, Wiltshire Council leader Baroness Scott, chairman of Riding For the Disabled, Lady Hill, Colonel  of SW Cadet Headquarters, Col David Carson, Bishop of Salisbury, Rt Rev Nicholas Holtam, and Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire Mrs Sarah Rose. The service was led by Wilton Rector Rev Mark Wood and the bishop, who also gave the address. Organist was Dr Nigel Allison.

After the service, light refreshments were served, giving everyone a chance to mingle and socialise. A few local dignitaries voiced disappointment that the church was only half full for the prestige occasion.

The county service was the second big event in the week for the town. It followed Monday’s Christmas lights switch-on in the town centre which attracted a large crowd and was sponsored by Wilton Rotary serving free mulled wine, among other attractions for family members of all ages.
