Restored Art Deco cinema marks first anniversary

Step back in time in The Regal Cinema, Fordingbridge which is celebrating its first anniversary.

The Regal Cinema in Fordingbridge is the inspiration of a local business man who runs Corintec of Fordingbridge’s biggest private employers. For years, he drove past the dilapidated building and wanted to restore it to its full glory. In June, 2017, his dream was finally realised.

“It has become a major part of the community,” deputy manager, Bridget Mulrooney said, “and some locals say it has transformed their lives being able to come and walk to us, have a glass of Prosecco at the bar and watch a movie, once a week.”

The cinema has a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere, and a warm welcome from enthusiastic, film-loving volunteers – quite a contrast with the rather soulless cinema multiplex experience.

The beautiful Art Deco building has been transformed into its former 1930’s glory and provides a truly unique cinematic experience. In addition to the original foyer entrance, the deluxe 30-seater auditorium was restored beautifully with yellow 1930s style seats, wooden and gold drink holders, and plenty of leg room. The latest technology includes an astonishing audio and visual experience with a 4K projector and the latest Dolby Atmos fully-immersive sound system. There is also an elegant bar area with a selection of drinks and snacks.

The cinema shows a wide variety of films from a range of genres, as well as live satellite performances from the Royal Opera House, Royal Shakespeare Company, and National Theatre. Family-friendly screenings (to which under 17s go free!) are every Saturday afternoon, with a selection of themed films screened on a monthly basis. The venue is also available to hire for birthdays and special occasions, or for corporate events and video conferencing.

The cinema is open to all, but has several membership options with benefits that include reduced-price tickets and early notification of film screenings.

Anyone can buy tickets online at www.theregalcinema.org and in person at the cinema during opening hours, or from Fordingbridge Bookshop. Advance booking is always recommended to avoid disappointment, as seating is limited.
