Councils win £8.4m for housing development

Three have one their bids to devlop 2,700 homes.

North Dorset District, West Dorset District and Weymouth & Portland Borough Councils now have more than £8million-worth of funding for Housing Infrastructure projects in Chickerell, Portland and Gillingham.

The funding boost comes from the housing infrastructure fund, a government capital grant programme to help build more than 200,000 homes in England.

The councils launched ‘Opening Doors’ to tackle the housing crisis in the area, with a target of 20,000 new homes by 2033.

The ‘Opening Doors’ programme includes targeting more Government grants for housing schemes.

By 2033, the Economic Growth Strategy aim is for 20,000 new homes, 13,200 new full-time equivalent jobs, minimum of 70 hectares of new employment land, increase from 25% to 35% in the proportion of workforce with Level 4 qualifications or higher, additional £564 million of GVA to the Western Dorset Area.
