Nick and Zoe Hoare, landlords of The White Horse Inn in Quidhampton scooped the EuroMillions Millionaire Maker top prize on May 9.

They received the £1million prize on May 19 in the gardens of the traditional village pub with a huge morning gathering of wellwishers.

Nick bought the winning Lucky Dip ticket at Waitrose in Salisbury.

“It hasn’t sunk in, it’s been the most bizarre week,” a shocked Zoe Hoare revealed.

“Nick checked the tickets and phoned Camelot and they confirmed we had won £1million. It doesn’t happen every day,” she added, jokingly.

“We hired a rug cleaning machine to do the carpets and when we took it back, I decided to pick up a couple of EuroMillions tickets. Had those carpets not needed a spring clean, I wouldn’t have been in the shop buying a ticket,” Nick explained.

He checked his tickets the next day after finishing the lunchtime shift at the pub.

“It was only when I scanned the ticket with my National Lottery app and it pinged, that we started to believe,” Zoe said excitedly.

The White Horse was the first pub Zoe and Nick have run together and the popular couple quickly established themselves as part of the Quidhampton community.

They plan to give up the tenancy in six months’ time but are hopeful for the future of the pub.

“The White Horse means so much to Zoe and I,” Nick said.

“It’s going to be so hard to leave. We are here for the next six months for the villagers and local customers. It’s been the hardest decision of my life. We have spent the past three years working really hard to build up the reputation of the pub.”

“It’s the right time for us to leave and seek new opportunities: we know The White Horse will find a new landlord and landlady who will love it as much as we have,” Nick added.

“This is an amazing opportunity for us,” Zoe acknowledged
